How to get to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

If you have a travel specialist coordinating it for you, know that American, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue, United, – Spirit Airlines, Air Canada, and Southwest Airlines have scheduled non-stop service from all major US gateways to San Juan (SJU), Puerto Rico and/or to St. Thomas (STT), US Virgin Islands. These two international airports are the closets ones to the British Virgin Islands.

From St. Thomas or San Juan you have the option of taking:

  • A 45 minute small commercial or charter flight directly to Virgin Gorda, or
  • A 45 minute small commercial or charter flight to the neighboring Island of Tortola (EIS), capital of the British Virgin Islands, and take the 20-minute ferry ride or a private water taxi transfer to Virgin Gorda.
  • Note: Most travel sites like Expedia or Travelocity do not show an airport for Virgin Gorda because it only serves small carriers – this is changing so try to input VIJ as destination.

Guests arriving into San Juan can take a short 45 minutes flight directly to Virgin Gorda through the following commercial airlines or charter flight companies.

Guests arriving into the St. Thomas, USVI airport (STT) can take a short 15 minute flight to Virgin Gorda Airport (VIJ) only through charter flights.  They also have an additional option of taking a private water taxi or ferry.

A few recommended options for this method of arrival are:

 Public Ferry from St. Thomas (STT) to Virgin Gorda:
If you arrive and/or depart STT on a Saturday, Speedy’s Ferry (bviferries.com) departs Charlotte Amalie Ferry Dock at 4pm (check-in by 3:30pm) arriving in VG 5:45-6pm – direct St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda. The return departs Virgin Gorda at 8:30am and arrives in St. Thomas at 10am. SATURDAYS ONLY!

If you are able to arrive in St. Thomas the night before and spend the night, there is a ferry that departs at 9am to Road Town, Tortola. It arrives at 10am and then Speedy’s Ferry departs at 10:40am to Virgin Gorda arriving at 11:10am.

Later arrivals into St. Thomas can take a ferry to Road Town (Options for this or the above are: Native Son, Smith’s Ferry or Road Town Fast Ferry departing STT about 4/4:30pm, then on weekdays take Speedy’s 6:30pm ferry to VG arriving at 7pm (Weekends take a taxi to Beef Island; then 6:30pm Speedy’s to VG, arriving here just before 7pm.)

Several commercial airlines fly from San Juan (SJU) and St. Thomas (STT) to Tortola (EIS) airport. This is also the airport to land when arriving by private jet. Right on the airport grounds is the dock where you can take a ferry or private water taxi that in 20 minutes can take you to Virgin Gorda. For water crossing form Tortola to Virgin Gorda please refer to the next section titled Water Transfers from Tortola to Virgin Gorda.

For flights landing in Beef Island, Tortola, you will be met outside of Immigration/Customs by our Meet & Greet Team and taken via complimentary taxi to either Speedy’s Ferry or your Private Water Taxi, a short distance from the airport terminal building.

  • Speedy’s Ferry – departs from Road Town (for ferry arrivals) or Beef Island  the airport arrival location to Virgin Gorda.

PRIVATE WATER TRANSFERS
FROM BEEF ISLAND, TORTOLA TO VIRGIN GORDA

Private water taxis are available to go from Trellis Bay at Beef Island (Tortola’s airport grounds) to Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour Marina, Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda.
We will gladly coordinate these transfers for you – cost $500 each way for up to 12 people.

FERRY SERVICES 

There are two main ferry services from Tortola to Virgin Gorda:

Speedy’s Ferry that departs from Road Town (for ferry arrivals) or Beef Island (airport location).

    Cost: One-Way – $20 per adult and $15 for children (5-11); Round-Trip – $30 adult and $20 for children.

We will gladly coordinate these transfers for you.  Upon arrival in Virgin Gorda our Resident Concierge will meet your group, assist with the luggage and transfer them to your villa.

PRIVATE WATER TRANSFERS
FROM TORTOLA TO VIRGIN GORDA
Private water taxis are available to go from Trellis Bay at Beef Island (Tortola’s airport grounds) to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda. We will gladly coordinate these transfers for you.

Private Flights into Beef Island, Tortola:

  • Private aircraft are allowed into Beef Island Airport (TUPJ); the runway at 4642 ft. limits the size of aircraft able to land.
